When deciding what master’s program to join I was focused on learning a topic that I could use in my day to day teaching and help in my delivery of content. I was worried that I would be in a program that wouldn’t understand the day to day grind of a teacher and expect you to master a philosophy that is unrealistic in a traditional K-12 setting. However I have truly been emerged in new technological ideas that have brought both depth and breadth into my classroom and given the ability to provide learning opportunities in and out of the class. I now can take my content standards and a topic that students would find boring and bring it to life and the various technology that I have learned. Not only will students have new motivation toward a topic but they will now have new collaborative resources to not only have the students gain knowledge but to apply the knowledge and help share standards with other students outside of our classroom.
Using tools such as Wikispaces or Google Hangouts I’ve learned how to help students to collaborate with other students and to find ways to provide professional development with other teachers on ways to help with their lessons or bring them a new technology. I’ve been able to apply multiple ways to have students think critically and apply their new knowledge through simulation technology or even simple blogging on forums like Edmodo.com. I believe the most important standard I learned was how to use visionary leadership to teach digital citizenship. I have been able to show students proper methods of research and technology that can bring subjects to life, but keeping students safe, while using appropriate on-line use.
I believe with the technology resources I’ve gained I can use my skills to become my schools technology coach. I’ve learned this is an integral role in school as most teachers teach at a LoTi 2 or 3 and is more for research or drill and kill type lessons. I believe I can use the skills gained from this class to help educate teachers how to use technology to bring new life into their topic and how to have students take ownership of the material and learn the topic and valuable technology skills in the same process. I will be able to discuss with teachers their vision of the lesson and provide them feedback on how to make that happen and at times give them avenues they didn’t even know existed. The important thing I must stress now is to stay on top of new technology as it emerges and help my teachers find the resources they will need to help expand their content and technology knowledge.
