Reflection:
In order to illustrate the concept of differentiation I used the Online Teaching Portfolio I designed during ITEC 7481. During this unit I created a fully functional online government course for my current government classes. I have used this course for a flipped classroom as well as to accentuate my current brick and mortar classroom instruction. For my government website I have created multiple lessons that provide students a chance to obtain the classroom knowledge and the ability to do it on their level and with the assistance of fellow students. This course has multiple collaboration assignments designed to have students of higher levels working with students of lower levels.
I was able to model and facilitate an online course that focuses on creating student led assignments that focus on differentiating the lessons. I’ve modeled and facilitated these lessons to fellow teachers and to my students as they have worked with my students as they have guided their way through the lessons. I specifically designed this website to include videos to assist students with the understanding of the topics, as well as my personal lectures for the students to watch on their own times. I was able to implement these strategies as well in the class and found students really appreciated having the lectures on line and watching them whenever the needed to, and helped with comprehension. By having these lectures online and the collaborative plans I could focus on adjusting content, process, product and learning environments. Specifically changing my learning environment to a flipped classroom, or the campaigns students have made and the adjustments to allow students to create different types of commercials for their campaign assignment. I am also able to create a learning inventory survey and discussion board for students to inform me their learner characteristics and how I can adjust my lessons to help meet their needs once they take the survey. I was able to implement this year and provide students with written notes and videos of my lectures to help students of various audio and visual learners.
By creating the Online Teaching Portfolio I was able to learn how to create a functional online learning environment that will allow students to explore learning on their own times and by creating their own learning projects. I was also able to learn how to implement a flipped classroom and how to structure my classroom to accommodate my students while they take this course. To improve the quality of my Online Teaching Portfolio I would incorporate more lessons that would allow my students to work together to ensure understanding of the topics. I would also create more screencast lectures for my students to have the additional resource while they go through the course.
By creating this Online Teaching Portfolio I was able to create lessons and course that would allow students to create their own learning and truly obtain the content knowledge. This can be seen through improvement on tests and student assignments as well as improved SLO scores Improving SLO scores, providing rigorous student engagement and differentiating assignments all of which are incorporated on the online course are all strong aspects of the school improvement plan. By providing teachers lessons and concepts through professional learning I can help teachers provide similar lessons in their classrooms.
