3.4 Adaptive & Assistive Technology: Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. (PSC 3.4/ISTE 3d)
In order to help students with learning needs I was able to use many of the google tools using our schools chromebooks that could help students with their learning needs. One of the big tools used to help my students was the snap and read feature which reads the teachers lectures to the students and can be read in another language if needed. Also the use of chrome extension ublock origin to remove distractions from websites and help students with ADHD have less distractions while reading. Finally two tools I used to help students read with learning needs were NewsELA and the chrome extension Crafty Level. Crafty Level allows you to see the reading level of the website any student goes to and helps find websites that might fit your students reading level. NewsELA allows you to share the same article with all the students in your class but change it to meet the needs of each student you have in your class. This way students can still get the same content but read it on their level. I was able to implement all of these tools with my students and I still use them today to help differentiate the lessons in my classroom.
In order to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technology to support individual student learning needs I used my strongest technology resource, my chromebooks. While using the chromebooks I was able to facilitate students of all needs in my classroom by adapting the lessons using the NewsELA tools, snap and read, crafty level, and ublock origin. By using these tools I was able to make the reading levels to appropriate reading levels and for some students having the chromebook read to them using snap and read. Using these assistive technologies with my students I was able to differentiate my lessons and ensure that all the students were able to comprehend the topics addressed in my classroom as well as have students build their own learning with these resources.
By using these resources I have learned how to truly differentiate my classroom to help all student obtain the content knowledge. I was able to learn about these resources available to help the students specifically how to use the tool snap and read to read to the students. One change I would make would be to teach my students how to use all of these tools ahead of time. This would allow my students help themselves and to use these tools at home for homework. By teaching these tools to the students they can stay on pace with the other students and they can use these resources to help create their own learning as well.
These resources specifically helped student learning because they allowed students with learning disabilities to learn the topics through their own learning styles. This was evident with their score improvement on their tests once they had these tools to help bridge the gap in their learning. This has a direct impact on the school improvement plan as one part is to help build the scores of the percent of our students in the lowest quartile of scores. I have been able to help all teachers with this school improvement mission by teaching them how to use these tools in their classrooms through the professional learning Technology Tuesday’s course.
