2.2 Research-Based Learner-Centered Strategies
Candidates model and facilitate the use of research-based, learner-centered strategies addressing the diversity of all students. (PSC 2.2/ISTE 2b)
Artifact
Reflection:
For this artifact I used my engaged learning project, in which I created an on-line textbook using wikispaces.com. For this assignment I divided students into groups to work on a section of the chapter and had every class work on the same assignment. Together each group in each class collaborated using wikispaces.com as well as through google docs and google hangouts. The students were able to decide what were the key points that needed to be highlighted for the site, as well as what resources needed to be included for the on-line textbook. The use of this online textbook through wikispaces.com allowed the students to create a textbook that could be updated as history changes, and to allow for students to always have an active resource in a day in age when textbooks are going to the way side.
I was able to model research based strategies by researching methods to challenge students using collaboration. Using research based I found that when students direct their own learning through your guidance they have a stronger tendency of retaining the knowledge. Other research based strategies was use of collaboration to encourage differentiation and a true understanding of the topic. Having students of varying levels of understanding help each other as they guided through the topics helped bring students to the same levels of learning of every topic. So I was able to facilitate an on-line textbook project that required students to create their own wiki page adding all the resources and topics that they felt would help students understand the important topics in U.S. History. They took the standards and they were able to find resources that met the standards requirements. Having the students find their own resources to match the specific Georgia Government standards and how to create their pages to be user friendly models learner-centered learning. In order to create diversity of all students I allowed students to use class time and school laptops as well as time in the morning and afternoon in the school library to allow for students who didn’t have access to have computer time. I also allowed for students off varying understandings of history to work together to support the students whom needed more assistance.
From this assignment I learned how to set up a wiki page to encourage collaboration and a true understanding of the topics covered. I also learned how to set up my class to first ensure netiquette was followed as well as classroom management strategies to ensure student engagement throughout the assignment. I was also able to learn how to work with wikispaces.com and the small details to ensure success with my students. One change I would make in the future is have my students use google docs to collaborate and only have one person making changes to the wiki page itself. As well as have each class work on a unit rather than all working on the same unit, as it became difficult for all of the students to agree on various topics or page setup for each page.
By creating this my engaged learning project using wikispaces.com, I was able to create an assignment that encouraged differentiation and collaboration. Through the work with wikispaces.com I found that student’s scores did improve as the research suggested it would. This works directly with the school improvement plan that promotes more rigorous learning as well as collaboration in the classroom. The improvement of U.S. History EOC scores were also a direct correlation to the School Improvement Plan and improvements of all EOC scores. Using my experience with wikispaces.com, I have been able to incorporate a professional learning on how to use wikispaces.com during the Technology Tuesday’s workshop to help encourage faculty development.
