3.1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning: Candidates model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. (PSC 3.1/ISTE 3a)
The Engaged Learning Project is the artifact that I selected to illustrate classroom management and collaborative learning. The project was created for my World History class during ITEC 7400 to show student engagement while using multiple technological tools. This particular assignment I created was designed to have the students create an up to date online textbook to since the school hadn’t adopted new textbooks in multiple years. I divided the classes into different topics and had them work with students in different classes using google wikispaces.com to collaborate. They came up with the material to present to students and used various media sources to explain the topic to the readers. I created the entire project idea as a way to increase student collaboration and technology use to create an understanding of the classroom topic.
I was able to model and facilitate effective classroom management during my sophomore World History course. I was able to use the Chromebook’s in the classroom and create classroom procedures that allowed for optimal classroom management. Procedures like signing out the computers, netiquette policy for using the internet as well as deadlines for students completion of the assignments. Once students understood the classroom management I was able to model and facilitate a functional collaborative learning environment. In order to have the students working toward collaborative learning I first placed them into groups that were designed to have learners of higher and lower levels and various strengths and weakness’ so they could assist each other, they then had to work with other groups from my different classes. From there these groups worked to decide how to create the optimal classroom textbook using the chat features in wikispaces.com and coming to a common agreement on the topic and illustrating a true understanding of the topic.
Through the completion of this assignment I was able to learn how to use wikispaces.com to create an online learning text book as well as how to organize groups and multiple classes to work together to create a project. I also learned that one negative of using wikispaces.com is it doesn’t enable students to see what each other is doing at the same time and only saves what the last person to do so completes. In order to make this adjustment I had students use Google Docs to share what they were typing and then have one designated student complete the update on wikispaces.com. I also decided to have a google hangouts sessions which allowed students in other groups to talk about the solutions and handle their textbook issues easier than the written notes.
By creating the engaged learning project I was able to improve student learning because they were able to create their own learning and prove through this rigorous process they understood the concepts in each of their content areas. Students’ scores on the test jumped dramatically on the following test especially in the fields they were responsible for. I was then able to show this same concept to the fellow teachers in my school and how it helped my classroom. This all relates to the School Improvement team as our IEP goal is to create rigorous collaborative learning to enhance our scores and this assignment was able to provide rigor and collaborative learning.
