3.6 Selecting & Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources: Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
The artifact I picked for standard 3.6 was the emerging technology project used for multimedia and web design. This project was designed as if I was making a presentation to the school administration to persuade them to purchase this new technology for the school. When creating this project I was able to research details about Britannica EBooks and the resourcefulness it provides to the school. I was able to research the benefits and drawbacks of this technology and the costs related to this technology. I was able to show that using Britannica EBooks would allow our school to have online textbooks and help teachers in a time period when textbook adoption doesn’t occur anymore. In this assignment I worked with my school librarian and my assistant principal when deciding whether or not we should purchase this technology.
By creating this project I was able to demonstrate my ability to collaborate with teachers and administration on effective ways to select and evaluate digital tools and resources. This was illustrated through the resources that the assistant principal, school librarian and I pulled together for the presentation we made to present to our schools principal. Together we were able to help explain the reasons this technology would benefit our school. Britannica EBooks provides accurate and up to date materials for teachers to present to students, specifically since many of their books are out of date. We found that this was suitable for our school as it met the needs we have of replacing our books and providing extra resources at the hands of all of our students. The technology was compatible to the technology we already have as it works with all chromeooks, student cell phones and student laptops. Because of the ability of my group to collaborate and evaluate Britannica EBooks we were able to prove that it is compatible, suitable and accurate to meet the needs of my school.
By completing this artifact I was first able to learn about the tool Britannica EBooks and the benefits that it will provide to the school. I was also able to learn how to work with my administration and fellow faculty members to create a presentation for the faculty and administration. The biggest change I would’ve made would have been to travel to another school using the technology already and seeing how they use it so I could provide firsthand knowledge of the topic. I would also bring in members of differing content groups to have them help with the research and have them help present this to their own content areas. I believe that both these changes would help introduce this new topic to the faculty and create a true buy in of the new technology.
By creating this presentation I was able to have a direct impact to teachers and students by first providing teachers with up to date resources to present to their students. Then allowing the students to view these resources on any platform they can find the internet and giving them the ability to find this knowledge anywhere. This can be assessed with how many teachers are using this resources and how many students are downloading the EBooks. This coincides directly with the School Improvement Plan as it is providing access for all students to get resources and helping teachers to provide and engaging lesson plan.
