3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources: Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
The Internet Lesson Plan was the artifact that best represents managing digital tools and resources within the context of a student learning experiences. This particular lesson was an online lesson plan addressing the topics of the Cold War. This particular unit started with the onset of the Cold War and finished with how the Cold War finished and having the students use their knowledge of the topic and illustrate their topic with a class discussion post. They also used the technologies of Timeglider.com to show how each event of the Cold War impacted the other and that it had a cause and effect relationship. I created this assignment to help my U.S. History students understand the impact of the Cold War and how it began and finally ended.
I was able to manage digital tools and resources within context of student learning experience by having the students use this online source to view the PowerPoints and videos for understanding of the content. I then was able show the ability to manage digital tools and resources through the use of timeglider.com website to have the students bridge the each event of the Cold War together to truly indicate cause and effect with each of the event. Finally the tools and resource I finished with and was able to manage was the discussion board in which the students had to create their own learning concept by answering how the altering of various events in the Cold War would have an impact on our history now.
Through completing this artifact I was able to learn how to create an online module to teach a unit for my classes. I was able to provide a comprehensive model that incorporated the class Power Points, YouTube videos to sync home the concept and activities to subsidize and expand the learning in the classroom. The biggest alteration I would have made for this assignment would be to include screencasts of the lecture as well as live synchronous class sessions that would ensure that students had the lectures to view again and so I could answer any questions they might have. However this project provided me the opportunity to dive into creating my own online course and gave the background for my future online course.
The impact on student learning was instantly evident with the student’s final discussion post and the timeglider website in which the students were able to show they had a true understanding of the Cold War. They then performed expertly on their unit test as well as the EOC on the topics of the Cold War. Performing better on the EOC in U.S. History is a concept on the School Improvement Plan as well as increasing student engagement and rigor which is accomplished on this site as well. By creating this website I have a solid understanding of how to create an online unit and have helped other teachers create similar websites as well through my Technology Tuesday platform.
