3.7 Communication & Collaboration: Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
The artifact I picked for show communication and collaboration was my online teaching portfolio. This portfolio shows all of the current facets of my online classroom. I created this site for my U.S. Government class using the Hall County Schools LMS system. With this LMS I am able to communicate through multiple people through various methods. Some of the communication can be through live synchronous sessions, e-mail, students grades on Infinite Campus, remind text updates, the use of the LMS as the class website, mass e-mailer, Facebook and Twitter. All of these communications help keep the school and all of the parties involved aware of what is going on and allow all parties to work together for the betterment of the students.
The use of e-mail, infinite campus messenger, website and remind all allow teachers to stay in communication and collaborate with students, parents, peers and community. I was able to create an LMS that allowed for students to collaborate using the conference feature students can work together to finish their assignments. Using the Infinite Campus messenger and grades parents can stay informed and updated with how their students are doing. Using google forms we are able to communicate with the community as a whole to understand what we can help better impact our community. My LMS also allows for many of the assignments even allow students to work with Facebook and twitter to collaborate about our topics with the global community and provide an insight broader then just our local community.
By creating this LMS I learned that teaching an online course requires even more communication measures to ensure that everyone is informed and prepared. Therefore I learned how to create a website that allowed for multiple forms of communication as well as assignments that allowed my students to collaborate with multiple people outside of the school. One change I would be to create a classroom Facebook and Twitter page to allow for another avenue to communicate with members of the community easier. I would also add access for parents to see all of the assignments on the website so they can help their students stay organized.
This artifact has a direct impact on the School Improvement Plan which has a focus on finding ways to collaborate and communicate with our parents. Which has a direct impact on student learning for the more parents understand what is going on and how they can assist their students, students’ scores have shown to have dramatic improvements. This can be seen through our climate surveys and parent surveys when discussing the topics of communications. I was also able to show teachers how to use Infinite Campus Messenger as well as the collaborative tools of google docs and Canvas discussion board and conference to help them communicate with parents and students as well.
