5.1 Needs Assessment: Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
For this artifact I was able to do a school and individual needs assessment to help better understand how technology is being used in our school. I created a survey that provided insight on how technology is being used in our school and the types of lessons being taught in our school. I then carried it over to a one on one survey with a teacher at my school to understand how I could assist them better in the classroom. This survey and our discussion allowed me to create an organized plan to help him create a more rigorous technology involved lesson plan. Finally after understanding how I can help and devising a plan together we worked together to create a plan and we used this plan in his class in which I modeled the lesson and he then taught the lesson and we reflected at the end of the unit.
This artifact reflects my ability to conduct a needs assessment to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level and subject area strengths and weaknesses through the survey concluded with the faculty. These surveys provided information about how my school integrates technology and the levels of technology found in the school. I was also able to use the needs assessment to inform myself how to better address the needs of the school as well as how to address the faculty in future workshops. The needs assessment helped inform me how to create the “Technology Tuesday” workshop which has specific function which is to design teaching that helps promote rigorous technology use. This also informed me on how to best assist my colleague on how to best help him in his classroom such as using a webquest because it would fit with the current concepts he has of technology.
I was able to learn by creating the needs assessment, ways that I could find how I could best assist my school by creating a school survey. I was also able to learn how to conduct a one on one interview with a teacher to find how to assist his needs. Through this I was able to learn how to work collaboratively to create a plan to assist his instruction and build upon his current technology uses. What I would’ve liked to do differently to help improve the quality of the survey would be to conduct this survey before the start of summer. I wasn’t able to get all of the teachers at school to complete this survey and I feel that is a direct effect of teachers being on summer break.
This artifact has a direct impact on the school improvement plan as I am helping understand the deficits that teachers have in creating rigorous technology lessons. Our current school improvement plan references creating professional learning designed to increase rigor in the classroom. This also has a direct impact on faculty development as I am creating professional learning designed to help teachers create rigorous technology lessons. Through this rigorous lessons student learning will be impacted as it will more student driven learning and lessons that cause the students to use their critical thinking skills. This will be evident through the lessons that are being created based from the professional learning that is guided from the needs assessment.
