Reflection:
This lesson is a unit lesson of the events of the cold war. To start we would review how WWII ended and the political fallout caused from it. Then I would have the students create a foldable note in which they would start a paper time line and record the various events of the cold war. Then throughout the lesson they would go to timeglider.com and create a timeline with a brief synopsis of every event and pictures, due at the end of the unit. I would also lecture using Microsoft power point which has bulleted information about the cold war and images I have used from my google searches. I would then use Youtube.com show the History of the U.S. (portion on the cold war), Crash Course U.S. History (Cold War), and a short video on History.com (Cuban Missile Crisis and Bay of Pigs) to help students have a visual of the historical events. Following the video on Cuban Missile Crisis I would have the students to go Edmodo.com and put a blog post discussing whether or not they would have invaded Cuba finding an article to support their research. We would also have a blog post discussing whether or not they would’ve taken the troops out of Vietnam and or left them in, they would use the articles that I highlighted and noted using Diigo.com to support their views. In both blog post they would need to reply to 2 other students post using proper netiquette and providing proper feedback. Finally we would use plickers.com and usatestprep.com to prepare for the test on the unit.
This artifact shows that I can model and facilitate multiple digital tools in my classroom. I was able to model the use of timeglider.com, power point, youtube.com, Edmodo.com blogs, and plickers.com. I was able to facilitate students in my class using timeglider and Edmodo through the computers in my classroom and assist them as they completed their virtual timeline and blog posting. These digital tools provided these students with authentic learning experiences because they were able to create the timeline and see how one event led to another. It is also authentic because through the blog posts they are able to discuss how history could have been changed with different decisions and how they might have affected us. Finally with the use of Diigo.com I am able to provide them with resources and have them break down the article to help better understand what is being portrayed in the article as well as use the new knowledge to change or solidify their current opinions.
I learned from this artifact first how to use the Diigo and timeglider tools.
Using these tools I have been able to provide valuable resources for my students with my notes on them to assist their understanding. As well as using the timeglider to help bring history to life and visually see how each event has a cause and effect relationship. I was also able to learn how to manage blog postings with my students and how to create an atmosphere of netiquette. I would change the use of Edmodo.com for our current Canvas LMS which is more user friendly and allows for more checks on the actual discussion. I would also incorporate the youtube videos on the Canvas system to keep all of the content in one source for the students to review later and for easier teacher access.
Through this assignment I was able to learn new resources that challenge my students and provide more rigorous assignments and to promote differentiation among our students. Because of these tools I am able to improve our EOC scores as well as the class scores, which is a direct impact to the school improvement plan. Also having used these new tools in the classroom I can now share these resources with other teachers during our technology professional learning. Providing these teachers with firsthand knowledge of how to use these tools and the pros and cons involved with each of these tools will help impact teachers learning and therefore impact their classroom instruction.
