Screencasting is going to change the way that I teach from now on…..WOW!! With one device I can find a way to help my students and faculty in a matter of minutes. In particular I have been using Jing to do my screencasting and I found this to be an amazing tool. The ability to teach narrate a lesson on PowerPoint, to send a quick how to video to another teacher, or to do a virtual classroom tour on parent night are all ways in which I plan on using Jing in the future. I believe this tool will save me time in the classroom, while also allow me to share information to my students from home.
Recently my count has been hit by snow and we have had to cancel school. Now that we are in our 5th day without school, my county has instituted the policy of teaching from home. Before this I would have given my students a reading assignment and realize that I would have to still teach the topic to the students when we get back. But today with the use of Jing I have presented the lecture to my entire students and directions for their comprehension assignment. This has allowed me to keep pace with my curriculum and know that the students were able to still receive the correct content. Now when we get back to school I can review and move on, rather than reteach and lose another day to the same lesson.
Jing also provides a great way for you to share a how to video with your fellow teachers. I have had a lot of teachers ask me how to use the Wikispaces ever since they have seen my last project. I am constantly going to their classrooms or having them come to mine and still addressing questions afterwards after they start working with it. Now I can create a five minute Jing presentation on how to use Wikispaces and how to trouble shoot, which will then save me time and allow that teacher to keep that lesson with them if they have any questions or need a reminder later. I know I already used this today when my Mother called me and asked me how to uninstall something from her computer. I simply made a quick screencast and she now has that forever.
Parent night at my school, I feel like a broken record, droning on and on about my syllabus or my website or different class projects. By the end of that day my voice is gone and I am ready for the weekend. Now I can create a screencast going over the same information and only have to present that information once. Which of course now frees me to spend more time giving them information about their student in specific and less about the same routines. I can’t wait to try this next parent night and the best part is it is recorded for the parent who wasn’t able to make it.
Jing is going to be a great resource for me moving forward in my career and I can really see this impacting all of my lessons. To be able to assist not just one person but multiple people in a matter of minutes with a resource they can save makes Jing a must have resource for all teachers. And I can see this being a great resource for students as well as they work on their projects. With all of the various applications this can be used for and because it is quick and easy to use, there is no doubt this will be in many classrooms. Soon everyone in my school be saying: “Lights, Camera, Jing!”
